Gymmin’ It – Again

For a while, the thoughts of the gym made me sweat more than going to the gym actually did. What am I supposed to do? What is that machine? Do I look like Napoleon Dynamite in my yoga pants? Well, as of two weeks ago, I have *sort of* over come my fear of going to the gym.

I’ve joined three gyms in the past seven years, but never really got much use out of my membership. Fourth time lucky, right? I’ve never really liked team sports as I amn’t that competitive by nature, so apart from swimming classes and ballet over the years, exercising has always been to my own accord. Two weeks ago, after four weeks of decision making (I know, I know) I decided to join the gym – again.

My holiday was three weeks away, and I wanted to feel good for the two weeks I’ll be there. But more importantly, I wanted to feel healthier. I know that I wouldn’t see major results that quickly, but I knew that just the feeling of exercising would make me feel great. I eat pretty well, and walk quite a lot, but I had no means of strenuous exercise in my routine apart from the odd run once a month.

The gym I joined has loads of different classes available, and while I was really intimidated doing them at first and afraid of looking stupid, I soon realised that no one else is looking at what you’re doing because they’re so focused on themselves. In the past two weeks I’ve actually started to look forward to going to the gym, which is something I never thought I’d say. Classes are great because everyone is in the same boat, and when you have other people around you you’re more likely not to stop!

After just a week I really started to notice small differences in how I looked, but big differences in how I felt. I’ve been sleeping better and didn’t crave pizza for a week (shock horror!).

I’ve just been doing classes, but am meeting with a personal trainer tomorrow who is going to give me a training plan based on the information I gave her last week. I’m really intimidated by using weights and machines, but I’m sure I’ll be comfortable using them as quick as I was with doing the classes.

I’m the kind of person who is always tired, but have noticed a big difference in my energy levels since I started exercising regularly. I’m going four or five times a week, which I never ever thought I could do. I’m not going to put pressure on myself to go when I just don’t have the time though, because I really want this to stay something that I enjoy doing.

If you’d like to hear more about my progress and gym journey (lol) leave a comment below, and I’ll definitely do it!
